The Port of Constanța reaches the Danube through the 64.4 km Danube–Black Sea Canal, which cuts the trip to Cernavodă by about 400 km compared with the route through Sulina. From there, barges sail up the Danube to ports in Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. Through the Rhine–Main–Danube Canal, the waterway continues all the way to the North Sea. At berth RO-RO 4 we discharge cargo from the ship straight into the barge with the Mantsinen 200 DES crane, and load river-borne cargo straight into the ship, with no storage in between.
By rail, Constanța sits on the Rhine–Danube TEN-T corridor, which links the port with Bucharest, Timișoara, Budapest, Bratislava, Vienna and Munich. Romania uses the standard European gauge, so wagons loaded in the port can run through to Central Europe with no change of gauge. At our berth, cargo reaches the wagon by truck. Wagons and trains are provided by partner rail operators, for destinations in Romania and across Europe.
Barge and rail suit large volumes and heavy cargo: long steel, steel coils, rebars, big bags, bulk, machinery. On the canal, a convoy of up to six 3,000 t barges carries 18,000 t, roughly the load of 700 trucks of 25 t. When the Danube runs low, cargo can wait in our 20,000 m² of storage until the barge sails.
